SGI a trusted leader in technical computing, was formed in May, 2009 when Rackable Systems, Inc. acquired substantially all the assets of Silicon Graphics, Inc.

SGI is focused on helping customers solve their most demanding technology challenges by delivering high performance computing, server, storage, data center and cloud computing solutions and professional services. The company develops, markets and sells a broad line of low-cost, mid-range and high-end scale-out and scale-up servers and data storage solutions, as well as differentiating software. SGI sells infrastructure products designed-to-order for large-scale data center deployments. In addition, it provides global customer support and professional services related to its products. SGI enables enterprises to meet their computing and storage requirements at a lower total cost of ownership and provides them greater deployment flexibility and scalability.

SGI products and services are used by the scientific, technical and business communities to solve challenging data-intensive computing, data management and visualization problems. These technical computing applications typically require large amounts of compute power along with fast and efficient data movement both within the computing system and to and from large-scale data storage installations. SGI systems access, analyze, transform, manage, visualize and store very large amounts of data in real or near real time.

The vertical markets served include the federal government, defense and strategic systems, weather and climate modeling, physical sciences, life sciences, energy (including oil and gas), aerospace and automotive, Internet, financial services, media and entertainment, business intelligence, and data analytics. Specific system applications within our target vertical markets include simulating global climate changes, accelerating engineering of new automotive designs, supporting homeland security initiatives, real-time fraud detection and gaining business intelligence through data-mining.

SGI pioneered Eco-Logical™ data center design with innovative technologies in the areas of chassis and cabinet design, power distribution techniques and hardware-based remote management capabilities. SGI offers compute servers using a proprietary half-depth design, enabling back-to-back mounting for higher server density and improved thermal management. Data center products include the ICE Cube® modular data center (MDC) product line, which augment or replace traditional brick-and-mortar facilities, and the company now offers a line of MDC solutions with a Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) ratio as low as 1.02. SGI offers CloudRack® C2 with breakthrough density and configurability for cluster computing, and MobiRack™ for mobile, all-in-one data center capabilities for field deployments. SGI Rackable® and CloudRack solutions support Hadoop as the overlying application layer, and can be designed and built with the customer's choice of processors.

SGI is a leading developer of enterprise-class, high-performance features for the Linux operating system. We provide our customers with a standard Linux operating environment combined with our differentiated Linux extensions that improve performance, simplify system management and provide a more robust development environment.

In February 2010, SGI purchased substantially all the assets and assumed a limited number of liabilities of COPAN Systems, Inc., a provider of high performance storage archive solutions for real-time access to long-term persistent data.

In March 2011 SGI announced that it had acquired all outstanding shares of SGI Japan, Ltd., from a consortium of investors that included NEC Corporation, Sony Corporation and Canon Marketing Japan. This acquisition will serve as our strategic entry into the large technical computing market of Japan, and SGI expects that the transaction will accelerate growth opportunities in this important market.

SGI has approximately 1,500 employees worldwide and sells systems, technologies, software, and services to a base of over 6,500 customers in 50 countries through our direct and indirect sales force including OEMs, system integrators and value added resellers.
